Cheese & Wine reception in the Heritage and Community Centre followed by opening of:

 

'Marvellous Motif"

 

Art Exhibition to celebrate the Devil's Bit Mountain which forms the backdrop to the Barony and which is strongly featured in the folklore of the O'Meachairs. The name 'Marvelous Motif'' is taken from a reference to the Devil's Bit by the late Nobel poet Seamus Heaney in correspondence with Denise Meagher of our organising committee.

 

Internationally renowned artist and Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) exhibitor Alice Maher will open the exhibition.

 

The artists who will exhibit include:

Panel Discussion/'Cuirdiocht'

 

Later, Keith Fahey of Tipp FM will host a panel of contributors including Alice Maher; UCC Professor Emeritus, William Smyth; Former Lord Abbott of the Cistercian Monastry at Mount St. Joseph's, Fr Laurence Walsh OCSO, noted GAA expert and enthusiast John Costigan and a representative of the diaspora, Ms Christine Timoney; all of whom will assess the contribution of both the O’Meachairs and the impact of this unique landscape to the lives of many at home and abroad.

 

The discussion will also be open to those in attendance with contributions invited from the floor. 

 

The organisers would like to acknowledge White Gypsy Brewry and Cooleeney Cheese for their sponsorship of the local cheese selection.

Academic Conference

 

The conference is concerned with the late medieval history and development of the O'Meachair clan and of the Barony of Ikerrin itself.  

 

UCC Professor Emeritus William Smyth will chair the conference.

 

Keynote address:

Dr Paul McCotter, University College Cork will deliver the keynote paper on "Studies in the history of Ikerrin and Elyocarroll"

 

 

Other Papers will include:

 

  • Seosamh O'Daibhin - "Anomalous Estates - late Medieval Castles and Lordship in the Barony of Ikerrin"

 

  • Adrian Hewson - “The late medieval church in the Barony of Ikerrin under O’Meachair patronage”

 

 

Renowned local historian Willie Hayes will give a response to the papers delivered.

Genealogy Workshop

 

Henry Healy together with expert Genealogists Susan Chadwick MAPGI (of RTE One Television's 'Genealogy Roadshow') and Clare Bohan will lead this afternoon session to assist participants with their ancestry related queries and to help those who wish to embark on compiling their family tree.

 

The session will include:

  • Review of sources of research - 1901/1911 Census, Griffith's valuations, Church records etc.

  • Professional Genealogists will assist with individual queries

  • Resource team will assits and demonstrate online searches

  • Contributions from the floor about individual O'Meachair families

 

Local Historians from around the Barony will be on hand to give the benefit of their years of local knowledge and experience and to supplement the advice that the professional genealogists will offer.

A selection of notable contributions will be called upon throughout the day.

Social Gathering set in medieval village of Clonakenny

​

Included in the evening event will be fun family occasion with music, food and a series of light hearted entertainments.

 

  • The evening will include a specially commissioned dramatic piece recounting the last days of the O'Meachair chiefs.

 

  • The proceedings will be interspersed with short vignettes celebrating the O'Meachairs and the Barony through the ages.

 

  • The evening will also feature a humorous 'apology' from a member of the conquering Cromwellian Hewson family. 

 

  • Also, featuring the best of Irish traditional music and dance.

 

This will be a family focused social event interspersed with appropriate historic reflections and annecdotes.

 

This will be a fitting and fun finale to the two days.
